Johannes Voet

Johannes Voet (Utrecht 3 October 1647 – Leiden 11 September 1713) was a Dutch jurist.

Life

Voet was the son of Paulus Voet, who was the son of famous theologian Gisbertus Voetius. He probably studied in Utrecht, after which he became a professor in Herborn. In 1673 he was made professor of law at the universiteit van Utrecht. From 1680 until his demise he was professor at Leiden.

Work

The most famous work of Voet is his Commentarius ad Pandectas. While it shows signs of legal humanism, it can also be considered a Dutch form of Usus modernus Pandectarum. In the 19th century it was translated in Italian and it still is an important source of law for the South-African system of law.
